Salerno, 9-28 September 1943

Although now largely overlooked, the landings at Selerno were significant as the first invasion of mainland Europe by the Western Allies. They are also often seen as a primarily American operation, but half of the US Fifth Army which conducted the landings were British troops.  These included 46th Division and the 5th Sherwood Foresters, responsible for the northern flank of the beachhead with Naples as the objective.   After holding off fierce German counterattacks in the days following the landings, the division fought its way north through daunting terrain to finally break out onto the plain of Naples and capture the city.
